Mindanao Displacement Dashboard, December 2016 – January 2017
Due to flooding following heavy rain, 98 families (around 490 persons) evacuated from their homes in Kalamansig, Sultan Kudarat province, on 06 November. All had returned to their homes by the end of November. An armed encounter between two private parties arising from a land dispute in Sultan sa Barongis, Maguindanao on 09 November caused the displacement of about 200 families (1,000 persons); no information is available as of this report regarding their return. In Balindong, Lanao del Sur, a firefight broke out on 11 November between members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and alleged members of local militia units, leading to the displacement of 437 families (2,175 persons). As of the end of November, 116 families (576 persons) remain displaced in Balindong, while the rest have returned. Clan feuds led to two incidents of displacement in November: in Datu Piang, Maguindanao on 13 November, affecting 1,184 families (5,920 persons); and in Pikit, Cotabato on 20 November, with 369 families (1,845 persons) displaced. As of this report, the IDPs affected by these two clan feud-induced displacements remain displaced. In Talitay, Maguindanao, 170 families (850 persons) evacuated from their homes on 18 November due to military activities linked to a law enforcement operation; all of them had returned to their habitual residences as of the end of November. Clashes between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Maute Group in Butig, Lanao del Sur have resulted in the displacement of at least 2,218 families (11,090 persons) starting from 24 November. As of this report, they all remain displaced, and significant protection concerns have been reported; government actors have provided initial assistance and are in the process of validation.
A shooting incident on 27 November in Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguindanao caused 50 families to evacuate; all of them returned to their homes shortly after being displaced, but tensions within the area remain high.
