Mindanao Displacement Dashboard March 2016
While the Law Enforcement Operation (LEO) of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) against the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) is ongoing, sporadic skirmishes in various other parts of Mindanao also forced families to leave their habitual residences in March. A total of 4,972 families (estimated 22,497 persons) have been displaced in March 2016 mostly due to armed conflict-related incidents involving the AFP and the New People’s Army (NPA), in central and eastern Mindanao particularly in the provinces of Davao Oriental, North Cotabato and Surigao del Sur. By the end of March, only 7% of the total reported displaced population have returned to their habitual residences. Many remained displaced due to continued insecurity in conflict-affected areas. UNHCR in Mindanao has been actively monitoring these incidents in close coordination with Protection Cluster members.
