IDPPAR no. 12: Forced Displacement in Lamitan City due to Disaster, Issue no. 1
INCIDENT BACKGROUND
On 14 October 2020, Tropical Depression Ofel brought heavy rains and caused flooding in Lamitan City, Basilan Province, affecting eight of its barangays- Malinis, Malakas, Matatag, Maligaya, Lomook, Sengal, Maganda and Matibay- forcing residents to leave their homes in search for safer ground.
CURRENT SITUATION
As of 16 October 2020, a total of 665 families (approximately 3, 325 individuals) were affected by flooding and they sought temporary shelters in the covered courts and respective barangay halls. Reports from local monitors revealed that some families have gradually returned to their residences after the flood subsided. The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), together with some other rescue volunteers, is closely monitoring the situation while validation and assessment are ongoing.
